I’ve never been a big horse racing fan (generally because my interest in sports is limited to college football), but I do love horses! Recently Harrison and I hit up a race at Lone Star Park to see what all of the excitement in horse racing was about. And I’d say it was a success for my first horse race!
To me, the cool thing about Lone Star Park was the fact that there’s a whole world of horse racing out there that I had no clue existed! And you get a front row seat to the horse race frenzy for a crazy low price. When we went, it was on Dollar Saturdays, so we paid $1 to watch the races.
Headed to a horse race? Check out my tips below!
What to wear
At Lone Star Park, you’ll find all sorts of people wearing all sorts of things. If you want to go traditional horse race attire with a sundress and cute hat, be my guest! But you’ll also see super casual outfits as well. It seems like anything goes!
What to bring
Bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses and/or a hat, and money if you want to bet on the races.
What to expect
When you enter Lone Star Park, there is an indoor portion that contains the betting arena as well as casual food-court style dining options. You’ll go through the indoor area to get to the races.
There are different seating areas depending on how much you want to pay. Our first time going, we were just getting our feet wet, and were perfectly content with general admission, where we found ourselves right up front during the races!
The most recent visit we decided to splurge an extra $3 to have access to the clubhouse, which is on the fourth floor. It’s where the restaurant is, and the food/drink minimum is around $12.50 per person.
While you can opt for a suite in an overhead box, sometimes being right up front by the horses is more exhilarating. Of course, if you want the aerial view of the race, you’re better off paying more for a better vantage point.
Also, at Lone Star Park, you can expect live music as well! When we went, a cover band was singing some great Miranda Lambert songs. They also have full live shows at Lone Star Park, you can find more information about the performances on their website.
