Retro Confidence: Embracing This Summer’s Swimsuit Trend

Swimsuit season typically elicits two responses for your average girl: joy at being in the sun and terror at actually having to be in a bathing suit again! Getting that swim-ready body can be quite a doozy.

Because unless you’re one of those people that love to eat low carb all of the time or is obsessed with that post-gym feeling, getting in shape can be TOUGH.

But good news this summer- the latest trend welcomes curves and all body types!

The Style

High-waisted bottoms with stylish tops and the cutest prints are in. And this flattering style is so forgiving– so don’t feel like you need to be in the gym 24-7!

The look is a modern twist on the styles popular from the 40’s-60’s. It is flattering, modest, and feminine.

Can you imagine- before the 20th century, swim wear for women looked like full on dresses! At the turn of the century, legs were exposed (for lower to mid class ladies) and swimsuits fit more tightly to make them more practical. And though swim suits have changed drastically over time, we are now welcoming back this chic, older style.

The retro bikini is in, so you can go out with confidence.

My Retro Swim Suit

I’m absolutely loving my Femme de la Mer designer cherry print swimwear. Femme de la Mer is a company out of New Zealand that makes high quality swimwear that is flattering on every shape, size, and age. Since their distribution center is in Australia, they ship to the US and UK (which is great for me!).

While they have designer swimwear in all different styles, I chose this retro cherry-print suit and I’m so glad I did! It fits perfectly, the material is thick enough to where it feels super secure and thin enough to be comfortable, and it is just plain-ol well made. It’s premium swimwear that is still affordable- something that I am always looking for.

The rouching at the sides of the bottoms are the perfect detail while giving extra room for my curvy hips.

The top has a clasp closing, which is adjustable based on which hook you use. And it features the cutest bow which just adds to it’s playfulness!

I’m in their size 10 here (which I think is the equivalent to a US size 6). Though it is considered a US size small and I usually wear a medium, I chose it based off of the centimeter measurement chart. I probably could fit in their next size up, but I’m happy with the size I ordered! Either way, I’d recommend going off of their centimeter measurement chart!

Retro Confidence

This retro style transports me to the world of Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and the like.

To me, these women inspire confidence, femininity, and a natural grace and poise.

The tinier bathing suits get, the less subtle our sexuality becomes. By returning to retro, it’s almost as if our society is desiring the modesty and innocence present in “the good ‘ol days.” We are leaving behind notions of vulgarity and are instead demanding class.

As women, I feel like we should strive for just that: dignity and confidence in who we are- not in how others perceive us.

Being Honest

The trouble with that is that it is so hard to ignore what others think about. At least, that’s how it is in my case.

I can get so caught up in the comparison game that I’ve forgotten that this is exactly how God has made me: with my physical imperfections: large thighs, big feet, and that crooked tooth that is (im)patiently waiting for me to get invisalign.

But he’s given me an hourglass figure, good face bone structure, and pretty half-Asian eyes. OKAY STOP FOR A SECOND. That was really hard for me to do, picking three things about myself that I love. Now it’s your turn!! Right now- list three things about yourself that you love! And then embrace them!

So don’t be afraid to get in that swimsuit this summer. No matter what your shape or size, you should try out the retro suit and feel your confidence grow!

Stay true to yourself, embrace your flaws, and show off your femininity!

XO,

Jasmine
