My 2 Year Experience with Bulletproof Coffee

A heart attack in a cup, some might think. Science would say otherwise. And I say it’s pretty darn brilliant.

Truth is, Bulletproof coffee might sound strange if you’ve never heard of it before. But don’t knock it until you try it. Or at least until you learn more about it!

What is Bulletproof coffee made of?

The base ingredients of Bulletproof coffee are coffee, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil. You’ll need a blender as well, like this one. There are different ways to make Bulletproof coffee, but I’ll detail the most common way to make it at home in this post.

Coffee:

True Bulletproof coffee (find it here) is made from Bulletproof coffee beans- organically grown to have the least amount of toxins possible.

You can also use regular coffee to get the same general health benefits from the drink as a whole.

If you use a Keurig, you can also get Bulletproof coffee pods.

Can you use decaf coffee in Bulletproof coffee? Yes, you can. The benefits are most associated with the types of fat you are adding to your coffee, which means decaf coffee is fine to use.

Butter:

You definitely want to get grass-fed butter. The most common and popular brand is Kerrygold Butter, which you can get here or at your local health food store. Most generic grocery stores have started stocking Kerrygold as well.

Industrial butter is lower in quality and you’re not going to want to put 2 tablespoons of some crappy butter in your coffee.

MCT oil, or Brain Octane:

You can get Brain Octane, or MCT oil, from the Bulletproof website, your local health store, here on Amazon, or at Whole Foods. Keep reading for the low-down on Brain Octane.

How to make Bulletproof Coffee

Brew your coffee as normal. Then in a blender, combine your cup of coffee with two tablespoons of grass-fed butter, and one tablespoon of Brain Octane. WARNING!! Read below to get some very important guidelines when it comes to Brain Octane!!

Drink it instead of eating breakfast in the morning and you’ve got an easy, healthy breakfast!

Brain Octane

Bulletproof created Brain Octane, which is made out of concentrated MCT’s from coconuts. Short for Medium-Chain-Tryglicerides, MCT oil is a fat-burning miracle.  It is fuel for your body and mind.

But, if you’re not careful, it could make you have to use the bathroom quite frequently. The trick is to ease your way into the 1 tablespoon of Brain Octane. And I mean reallllly ease your way into it. Start out with 1/8th of a teaspoon, and work your way up slowly.

Conservative Schedule

  • Day 1-3: 1/8 tsp
  • Day 4-8- 1/4 tsp
  • Day 9-14- 1/2 tsp
  • Week 3- 1 tsp
  • Week 4- 1.5 tsp
  • Week 5- 2 tsp
  • Week 6- 2.5 tsp
  • Week 7- 1 tbsp

Why go through all of this trouble? Because of the amazing benefits! Brain Octane is kind of a magical fat-burning tool. It gets your body deeper into ketosis faster than almost anything. So yeah, it’s worth it!

Ketosis

Ketosis is when your body uses fat for energy, instead of carbs. Which is great, because you’re basically burning fat when you’re in ketosis! It’s a complex process and I’m not an expert on it, so read more about it here.

My experience with Bulletproof coffee & Brain Octane

I love, love, love Bulletproof coffee. I’ve been drinking it for over two years now.

My husband got me hooked on it when I tasted it for the first time. It has a great latte-esque taste because that is essentially what it is! Just with blended butter instead of steamed milk!

Of course, it isn’t nearly as sweet as your typical coffee (because it isn’t sweet at all!) but I had been drinking black coffee for a while, so that didn’t come as a surprise.

My daily routine

I have a cup of black coffee in the morning and then around 1PM I have a cup of decaf Bulletproof coffee (can you tell I like coffee?).

Why? I love having a cup of coffee in the morning- it’s really the action that I love. There’s just something cozy about a cup of hot coffee.

I save the Bulletproof coffee for later in the day because it is super filling. Since I’m simply not hungry in the morning, I don’t need a cup of fat to fill me up. This is a great way to do intermittent fasting, which is way healthier than you might think! (You can read more here, on my post about unexpected ways to get bikini body ready!)

By drinking it at 1PM, I stay full until an early dinner time!

I do this routine on most weekdays.

The benefits I’ve seen with Bulletproof Coffee

For me, I’ve seen great short-term and long-term changes.

When I drink my coffee, I’ve noticed that I am able to focus on my work and be really productive.

But my all-time favorite thing is that it helps me maintain a good body weight without working out. No joke! It’s true that over the past year, I’ve transitioned into a low-carb diet lifestyle, but I think that the combination of the coffee and my diet have had an amazing effect on my body.

My body has truly adapted to this lifestyle.  I no longer feel obsessed with food, tempted by every tasty treat. That is a huge change for me- I used to have some serious self-control issues when it came to food. When you drink Bulletproof coffee, you are filled up with good fats and just don’t crave that afternoon snack.

So overall, I’m skinnier, happier, and much healthier.
