I was forunate to get to chat with Scott on one of our sunset cruises. Here’s what I learned about him!
Captain Scott Self, the founder of Sail With Scott, was a longtime Rockwall resident, former mayor of the city, and a lifelong sailor. Before his passing, he built something truly special on Lake Ray Hubbard—a sailing experience rooted in community, reflection, and appreciation for the water.
After college, Scott worked at Merrill Lynch and set a personal goal to become mayor of a small town. He ultimately chose Rockwall, where he served as mayor and later as City Commissioner, playing a key role in shaping Rockwall Harbor.
Sailing had been part of Scott’s life since childhood on Eagle Mountain Lake in Fort Worth. Over the years, he sailed extensively in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, including routes from Bermuda to London. His advice if you want to try your hand at sailing? “Try sailing the British Virgin Islands. If you don’t like it there, there’s really not a more perfect place for sailing.”
During early planning meetings for Rockwall Harbor, Scott suggested offering sunset sailing cruises on the lake. When asked who would operate them, he responded simply, “I would.” That idea became the foundation for what is now one of the most well-known Lake Ray Hubbard sunset cruises.
