Incredible Winter Experiences at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Here are the best things to do in the winter at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and this part of central West Virginia! You'll find everything from carriage rides and Christmas trains to stunning state parks and waterfalls!

Heading to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in the winter? You’re in for a treat! There’s something truly magical about Christmas at Cass and the greater Pocahontas County area of West Virginia. Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, Cass transforms into a winter wonderland.

Transport yourself back to an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. The park’s 11-mile long heritage railroad and authentic company town are what make Cass Scenic Railroad State Park a must when in West Virginia. And winter is one of the best times to visit!

We got to experience what winter is like at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and the surrounding areas. With my husband and 1.5 year old son in tow, we stayed in a historic company house at Cass Railroad, rode the Cass Christmas train, and explored the surrounding areas over several days on a trip partnering with the West Virginia tourism board.

And with insight from locals, an itinerary from the department of tourism, and my own research in hand, we got to see some incredible places on this trip.

(PS. You can grab our exact itinerary at the end of this post if you’d like to follow it exactly!)

Let’s get to it! Here’s what you can expect when visiting Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in the winter!

Winter Hours at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

From November 1st to March 31st, the Company Store runs on its winter hours:

  • Sunday – Wednesday from 8am to 6pm
  • Thursday – Saturday from 8am to 8pm
  • Closed on Christmas Day

Best Winter Activities at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Ride on the Famous Cass Christmas Train

One of the highlights of the Christmas season in Cass is the iconic Christmas Train. This steam-powered journey takes you through stunning winter landscapes, with snow-covered trees and frozen rivers.

Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in December you’ll find this train departing from the Cass Depot, traveling along the scenic Greenbrier River. It lasts approximately 1.5 hours and features decorated & heated coaches.

Prices start at $41 for kids and $51 for adults (and children 3 and under ride free). As you ride, you’ll be treated to festive decorations, holiday music, and even a visit from Santa Claus! Kids also receive a free gift (when we went, it was a mug and little wooden train Christmas ornament).

My son’s favorite activity was the “snowball” fight, where you throw little white puff balls at each other on the train. If you’ve got kids, this is a fun experience for the whole family! It’s a must if you’re visiting Cass in the winter.

Get your tickets here, they sell out fast! (By early to mid-November, usually only Thursday and Friday trains are available.)

*If you’re visiting outside of December, there are still train rides running at Cass! The Greenbrier Express Winter Special runs round trip from Cass to Durbin and back. You’ll find this train ride happening on Saturdays and Sundays in January and February. This 5 hour train experience includes lunch.*

Stay in a Historic Company House

Did you know that you can stay in a historic company house right at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park? This is a unique way to experience the history here!

We stayed in a charming three-bedroom house and it was perfectly comfortable for our family. Prices typically start at $155/night, but prices can vary based on availability and house size.

Staying at a company house allows you to step back in time and get a feel for what life was like when these charming homes were built in the early 20th century.

These restored company houses maintain their historic charm, with features like hardwood floors, large windows, and cozy fireplaces.

But good news for those of us who enjoy modern comforts: while the houses retain their historic character, they’ve been thoughtfully modernized to provide comfortable amenities. You’ll find fully equipped kitchens, modern bathrooms, and bedding/towels/linens!

In the winter at Cass, they decorate the company houses for Christmas. It makes this experience feel extra magical at nighttime with all the Christmas lights!

And convenience is key: you’ll be walking distance from the souvenir shop, food, train, and trails!

Visit the Cass Historical Theater and Logging Museum

While you’re experiencing winter at Cass, the Cass Historical Museum (the official name is Kyle J. “Catty” Neighbors Logging Museum) is a great option when it gets too cold or snowy out and you want to escape indoors.

Located in the historic Company Store building, this little museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of Cass and the surrounding area.

Best of all: it’s free!

The museum houses a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that bring to life the stories of the region’s logging industry, railroad heritage, and community life.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect to see at the Cass Historical Museum:

  • Railroad Artifacts: The museum showcases a variety of railroad artifacts, including tools, equipment, and photographs that tell the story of the Cass Scenic Railroad. Visitors can learn about the challenges and triumphs of building and operating a railroad in the rugged Allegheny Mountains.
  • Logging Industry Exhibits: Discover the history of the logging industry in the region through exhibits featuring logging tools, equipment, and photographs. Learn about the arduous work of the lumberjacks who harvested timber in the area.
  • Community Life: The museum also delves into the history of the community of Cass, highlighting the lives of the people who lived and worked there. See artifacts related to daily life, education, and social activities.
  • Civil War Artifacts: The museum houses a collection of Civil War artifacts, including uniforms, weapons, and personal belongings. You get to learn a lot about the impact of the Civil War on the region.
  • Photographs and Documents: There is a wealth of historical photographs and documents which provide a visual record of the past.

Dine at Shay’s Restaurant

Before heading on our trip, I was pretty confused by the restaurant at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The biggest problem I had was trying to find a menu or hours online. I think I had this issue because the restaurant was previously known as The Last Run Restaurant, which Google says is permanently closed. However, the correct name is Shay’s Restaurant, and it is very much open.

It’s located right next to the Cass Company Store and serves homestyle, comfort foods like burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, and more. Shay’s Restaurant also serves daily specials. You can find specials posted sporadically on their Facebook page.

Here are their winter hours:

  • Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Wednesday – Friday from 9am to 7pm
  • Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 7pm

Go on a Self-Guided Walk Through History

You can stop into the visitor’s center to grab a pamphlet that’ll help you do a self-guided walk of this logging town. Starting in front of the Company Store, this self-guided walk takes about 30 minutes to complete.

It points out landmarks, shares history, and gives you step-by-step directions on walking around the main logging area of Cass. (My favorite stop on the trail: the Cass Jail!)

Explore the Incredible Company Store Gift Shop

The Cass Scenic Railroad Gift Shop, also located in the historic Company Store building, is a treasure trove for railroad enthusiasts, history buffs, and souvenir seekers.

It’s actually the best State Park gift shop I’ve ever visited! This charming shop offers a wide range of unique items, from model trains and railroad memorabilia to local crafts and apparel.

We stocked up on Christmas gifts for our son and nephews here: variations of slime putty, model trains, and rubber band guns for the older boys.

Here are some of the souvenirs and treats you’ll find at the Cass Scenic Railroad Gift Shop:

  • Railroad Memorabilia: The shop offers a variety of railroad memorabilia, including model trains, hats, t-shirts, mugs, and postcards featuring the Cass Scenic Railroad and its iconic Shay locomotives.
  • Local Crafts: Support local artisans by purchasing handcrafted items such as pottery, jewelry, and wooden crafts.
  • Books and Maps: Expand your knowledge of the region’s history and natural beauty with a selection of books and maps.
  • Unique Souvenirs: Find one-of-a-kind souvenirs to commemorate your visit to Cass, such as vintage postcards, antique maps, and collectible toys.
  • Candy: There is no shortage of candy here, stocked up in barrels that surround the giant train set in the middle of the store.
  • Children’s Toys: Kids will love the variety of toys here, from wooden trains and puzzles to plush animals and crafts.

Outdoor Activities at Cass

If you like to get active and get outdoors, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers a variety of other winter activities:

  • Hiking: You can explore the park’s many hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging
  • Snowshoeing: Strap on a pair of snowshoes and venture into the backcountry. The park offers guided snowshoe tours, or you can explore on your own.
  • Sledding: Bring your own sled or rent one from the park and enjoy a day of sledding on the park’s slopes.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as deer, elk, and various bird species. Winter is a great time to spot these animals as they search for food.

Winter Adventures in Snowshoe and the Surrounding Areas

If you’re up for an adventure, there are so many magical winter activities in the areas around Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. I highly recommend these:

A Sleigh Ride in Snowshoe

For a truly romantic winter experience, take a sleigh ride in Snowshoe Mountain Resort. As you glide through the snow-covered forest, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the mountain and the surrounding valley.

You can even enjoy a cozy fire and hot cocoa after your ride! If there’s not enough snow on the ground by the time you do your ride, you’ll go in a carriage like we did (instead of a proper sleigh).

Snow Activities at Snowshoe Mountain Resort

This may be an obvious one if you’re familiar with the area! Snowshoe Mountain Resort is a popular mountain for snow activities. So if you like skiing or snowboarding, look no further! Snowshoe Mountain is known for its reliable snowfall (often over 180 inches per year!), and if natural snow is lacking, the resort’s state-of-the-art snowmaking system ensures consistent snow conditions throughout the season. Snowshoe boasts a variety of slopes, from gentle beginner runs to challenging expert terrain.

If you choose to stay at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, know that there is a variety of lodging options, from cozy condos to luxurious hotel rooms. There is also a good range of dining options, from casual eateries to fine dining.

(Since skiing wasn’t a good option with a 1.5 year old, we decided to just do a little photoshoot in a random pull-off in the snow! You can see what’s in my camera bag here!)

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

Established in 1928, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is West Virginia’s first state park and one of my favorite stops on our trip!

When we visited, we got to meet the park’s superintendent, Jim, who easily became my favorite person in all of West Virginia! He invited us in for hot chocolate and gave us plenty of information about the park. Jim also took time out of his day to do some hikes with me, since I was going to do them solo, which could be dangerous in icy conditions! He is now on our annual Christmas card list, and we hope to go back to Droop Mountain and visit him someday.

Back to the point: Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is a beautiful place where history and nature converge:

History of Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

Located on the site of the Battle of Droop Mountain, it is a significant historical site in West Virginia. It commemorates the last major Civil War battle fought within the state’s borders. The Battle of Droop Mountain happened on November 6, 1863. Union forces under General William W. Averell clashed with Confederate troops led by General John Echols. This decisive Union victory effectively ended Confederate resistance in West Virginia. This was a pivotal moment, solidifying West Virginia’s position as a Union state.

Things to Do at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

  • Hiking Trails: Explore the battlefield’s history on foot by following the interpretive trails, which provide information about the battle and the surrounding landscape.
    • While there are several trails you can do, here are some of the best introductory trails for this state park: Overlook Trail, Old Soldier Trail, and the Tower Trail
  • Scenic Beauty: Beyond its historical significance, Droop Mountain offers stunning natural beauty, with rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque streams.
  • Confederate Cemetery: The park is the final resting place for Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the battle.
  • Museum and Visitor Center: Learn more about the battle and the park’s history at the visitor center, which houses exhibits and artifacts.
  • Photo Op: This park is home to one of WV’s Almost Heaven swings! It’s located right by the tower.

The Falls of Hill Creek

Just a short drive from Cass, the Falls of Hill Creek are a stunning natural wonder. In the winter, the falls are often frozen, creating a breathtaking ice sculpture. When I visited, the falls were partially frozen and it was incredibly beautiful!

These falls are a stop on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail; you’ll find them hidden off of the Highland Scenic Highway. Consisting of three cascading falls, for most of the year, the Falls of Hills Creek are surrounded by lush, green foliage and blooming rhododendrons in spring. Come wintertime, expect snow- and perhaps ice!- on the ground! The trail will take you along a 1.3-mile out and back trek, moving lower towards the last falls in a series of pathways and wooden stairs.

In the winter, the main attraction in winter is the frozen waterfalls. The cascading water transforms into stunning ice sculptures, creating a magical winter wonderland. The trail leading to the falls is often covered in snow, adding to the wintery atmosphere. That being said, icy conditions can make the trail slippery, so it’s important to wear appropriate footwear with good traction! The trail involves some steep sections, which can be more challenging in winter due to the ice and snow.

The surrounding area is also a popular spot for winter hiking and snowshoeing.

Tips for Winter Hiking:

  • Wear Proper Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are essential. Consider using microspikes or crampons for added grip on icy surfaces.
  • Dress in Layers: Layer your clothing to adjust to changing temperatures. Waterproof and windproof outer layers are crucial.
  • Bring Warm Accessories: Add a warm hat, gloves, and scarf to keep your extremities warm.
  • Check Weather Conditions: Monitor the weather forecast before heading out. Avoid hiking during severe winter storms or icy conditions.
  • Inform Someone of Your Plans: Let someone know your hiking plans, including your expected return time.
  • Bring Essential Gear: Though this hike isn’t too long, if you want to play it safe when winter hiking, a headlamp, extra snacks, and water are great to bring with you!

Watoga State Park

Welcome to West Virginia’s largest State Park, spanning over 10,000 acres! Watoga State Park is also an official International Dark Sky Park, which means if you’re into star photography or camping, this is an excellent place to do so! (The name “Watoga” comes from the Cherokee word for “starry waters,” reflecting the park’s serene lakes and clear night skies!)

The park’s diverse landscapes, including mountains, valleys, forests, and waterways, have captivated visitors for decades. Watoga State Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. The park offers scenic drives along the Greenbrier River, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. As you explore the area, you might happen upon hidden gems like waterfalls and historic structures.

Things to Do in the Winter at Watoga State Park

For a great introductory visit to Watoga State Park, you can take a leisurely stroll on the Lake Trail, a 1.5 mile mostly level path that encircles Watoga Lake. However, I will say that when we visited in the morning, it was *FREEZING* cold and we decided to just grab photos of the lake instead of doing any hiking! However, if you’re visiting later in the day when the sun warms things up a bit, a hike could be a great option.

While some activities like swimming and boating are limited during the winter, Watoga State Park offers these winter experiences:

  • Winter Hiking: The park’s extensive trail network becomes a winter hiker’s paradise, covered in a blanket of snow.
  • Wildlife Spotting: Winter is a great time to spot wildlife, such as deer, turkeys, and various bird species.
  • Cozy Cabins: The park’s cabins provide comfortable accommodations for winter stays.
  • Winter Camping: Huddle around a cozy campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories.
  • Stargazing: With fewer crowds and clear winter skies, stargazing at Watoga is a truly magical experience.
  • Cross-Country Skiing: The park’s trails are ideal for cross-country skiing.
  • Snowshoeing: Explore the park’s backcountry on snowshoes.
  • Ice Fishing: Try your luck at ice fishing on the park’s lakes.

Remember to check weather conditions and trail conditions before planning a visit to Watoga State Park. Bring proper winter gear, including warm clothing, waterproof boots, and possibly snowshoes or ice cleats!

Go on a Scenic Drive

Winter in Cass, Snowshoe Mountain, and the greater Pocahontas County is breathtaking! And a great way to see it is on a scenic drive, weather permitting. My favorite scenic drive in this area is the Highland Scenic Highway! I got the above photos right around Little Laurel Overlook in Marlinton (you can type that right into Google Maps).
