A Stroll Down the Katy Trail in Dallas, TX

Coming from Maryland, when I think of a trail, I think of a hike through the forest.

Instead, Katy Trail is an urban trail that crosses through shopping areas, borders a gorgeous neighborhood, and runs partially parallel to Turtle Creek. It is great for joggers, walkers, marathoners, and bikers.

What to expect

Expect a flat trail that sometimes runs alongside a park, sometimes along a street, sometimes next to a neighborhood, and that is sometimes surrounded by green.

Since the trail runs from south of Mockingbird, through Uptown, until it reaches Victory Park, there are a ton of entrance points.

You can pretty much park anywhere that makes sense along it. We found a hidden entrance at Travis and Lemmon that we like to use.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t loop! If you keep on walking, you won’t eventually end up where you started! You’ll have to turn back around.

Some details

There are a few fun things about the Katy Trail.

One is the Katy Trail Ice House, a fun restaurant & bar that backs up to the Katy Trail. It has fun outdoor games like corn hull, a huge outdoor seating area, and great happy hour options.

There are also great parks along the Katy Trail and courtyard areas that intersect the trail.

At this section of the Katy Trail, you can find a great overlook of Lemmon Ave Park along Turtle Creek Blvd. There you can find a putting green, a field set up for croquet and other games, and a fountain view.

Want to bike?

Try a ride share option! We found a ton of bikes to rent all around the trail. Whether you use VBikes, Spin Bikes, Lime Bikes, you’ll see them all- no need to lug your own to the trail.

What to bring

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Water
  • Your dog
  • A stroller- babies are welcome here!
  • Your group of friends
  • Your jogging partner
  • Sunglasses and/or a baseball cap- gotta protect your skin!

What to wear

You probably know the answer to this one already, but you can expect jogging outfits, biking outfits, and casual stroll outfits.

And when you’re in the area…

There is so much to do!

  • Take a stroll through the gorgeous Highland Park neighborhood
  • Stop for brunch at Kozy Kitchen or one of the other amazing restaurants on McKinney
  • Do a little shopping in West Village
  • Get a drink at the Katy Trail Ice House
  • Visit one of the parks that the trail runs through, like Robert E. Lee or Reverchon Park

Have fun! What’s your favorite stop off of the Katy Trail?

Cheers!

  1. The bike sharing idea is huge in lots of European cities now. It’s a great way to go around towns and see more places.
