Exploring the Tyler Rose Garden

This weekend, Harrison and I explored the beauty of the Tyler Rose Garden in Tyler, TX. As the nation’s largest rose garden, I had high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint.

And as such, for any of you who want a weekend getaway from Dallas, here are ten aspects of the Rose Garden that you can expect on your visit.

1. Roses, roses, roses!

(You were probably expecting this one.)

2. Fountains

You’ll find a few fountains and ponds throughout the park. Grab your coins and make a wish!

3. Tall, majestic trees

Gigantic trees are everywhere in Tyler, but they feel especially majestic among the roses.

4. A lush green canopy

To really make you feel like you’re in a fairytale.

5. Bridges and overlooks

Of all shapes and sizes.

6. A trellis or two

Because what garden is complete without one?

7. Brick archways

The brick arched wall (c. 1938, WPA-built) was part of the garden’s original 1938 design but it was never the entrance to the Rose Garden — it is a freestanding architectural feature that serves as a backdrop to the Sunken Garden and a gateway between the North and Sunken Gardens. The actual original entrance from Rose Park Drive was an open pavilion supported by stone piers with an attached terrace and double staircase; it was enclosed shortly after the garden opened in 1952, altered in the 1950s–60s, and removed in 1991 to make way for the new Rose Garden Center. 8. Gazebos

For when the hot Texas sun has you begging for some shade!

9. Manicured walkways

So you don’t get lost.

10. Park benches

Because walking can be exhausting.

So grab your camera and go! Great photos are just waiting to happen. But don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!
