Want to plan a photo-worthy gender reveal party while trying to stay within budget? You’re on the right blog!
It’s no secret that babies can be expensive. Even the events leading up to a baby (the pregnancy itself, doctor’s appointments, a gender reveal party, a baby shower, decorating the nursery, and getting all the baby necessities) can cost expectant parents a pretty penny!
As a photographer and content creator, I knew I wanted to have something photo-worthy to post for our gender reveal announcement on Instagram.
And since this was our first baby, we wanted to invite our friends and family members, and host a breakfast gender reveal party to share with them our big news!
I looked up gender reveal party ideas and balloon arch/flower wall companies, and I quickly learned that a lot of what I was seeing was way out of my budget. So I decided that I wanted to try to tackle some DIY gender reveal party ideas for our celebration.
Combining things that my friends and I already had (which you probably do, too!) with things I bought off of Amazon, this party ended up a huge success!
The total amount you need to recreate our gender reveal party decor is just under $100!
Here’s a breakdown of what I spent.
Budget Gender Reveal Party Cost Breakdown
Here’s a breakdown of everything we purchased for our gender reveal.
I first list what I consider to be the bare minimum decor for a photo-worthy gender reveal setup (gotta get that picture/video for the ‘gram).
After that, I list everything else we bought if you want to recreate the ideas that we did for food, drink, other decorations, etc. for your own big reveal.

Tip: Canva is a great site to use for making personalized invitations!
The food and drinks we served our guests were plenty, and I’ll also list them down below.
Budget Gender Reveal Party Decor Ideas
Here is an in-depth summary of all of the budget-friendly gender reveal party decor we had at our event. You’ll notice we didn’t use any streamers or banners for our celebration – but you can totally hang some for yours if you prefer more festive decorations!
DIY Balloon Arch
A DIY balloon garland is the biggest money-saver when it comes to gender reveal party decor. Especially if you want a totally photo-worthy moment for sharing on social media! It’s one of my favorite gender reveal party ideas, and it’s so easy!
Balloon arches and garlands can cost hundreds of dollars if you have someone make it for you. But trust me when I say you can make one yourself! It might seem daunting when you think about size and design. But it really is no big deal at all.
If you have a couple of hours (this was my very first one and it took me two hours), you can do it. Easy peasy.
Balloon kits
Kits on Amazon are under $15. For this gender reveal party, I combined a few different balloon kits. You can do the same using this blue and pink kit, this white kit, and a couple of these giant white balloons.
(Now that the party’s over, I plan on using the leftover white, gold (from the pink and blue kit), and blue balloons for my baby shower! I’ll hang on to the pink ones in case we end up having a girl down the road.)
Electric balloon pumps
I highly recommend an electric balloon pump because it will save you a lot of time. This is the exact pump I got and it worked great!
Just be aware that the air shoots out pretty quickly, so don’t hold any balloons on for too long or they’ll pop! (I never had any of mine pop, though, so don’t be alarmed.)
Stringing balloons together
There are two main ways to string a balloon arch together: fishing wire (more complicated), and the balloon tape that comes with the kits. The balloon tape is insanely easy to use- you just stick the balloon end into the bigger hole and slide it over into the smaller hole. It’ll stay on its own!
As you add enough balloons to the tape, the balloon garland will start folding up on itself, giving you a balloon garland!
I didn’t follow a pattern, though I’m sure there are guides out there. I just tried to mix up sizes and colors as best as I could. And when it comes to the little balloons, I’d group 2 or 3 together.
Hanging your garland
Ideally, you’d have a plain backdrop (wall, fence, garage door) that you could hang your balloon garland from with command hooks.
We were doing our gender reveal at our friends’ house and they had just moved in and were wary of command strips (understandably!), so we tied ours to a curtain rod.
The one thing I’d recommend, if possible, is to make sure you aren’t backlit. I know, I know, we did ours so that we were backlit. But that was because it was raining outside, which changed our original plan of doing it in the backyard. Since we were avoiding command hooks, we ended up using that curtain rod instead.
Even backlit, I think it turned out great!
BABY Letter Boxes
Here’s a cheap and very easy way to add another cute aspect to your gender reveal moment! You can get baby boxes like these from Amazon.
They come flat and you assemble them. You can fill them with whatever you want! The B-A-B-Y letters on the sides are removable, too, so you can reuse the boxes for something else if you want!
You can fill them with balloons or tissue paper for a fun gender reveal party. Since we combined the two balloon kits, we had plenty of leftover balloons for the boxes.
Easy gender reveal party idea: check!
Boy or Girl Guesses
I gotta give full credit for this gender reveal idea to my sweet friend who hosted our party!
Since we were using two balloon kits to make just one balloon garland, we had balloons left over for this fun game! All you need is to grab boxes or baskets that your guests can drop their guesses into.
Are they team boy or team girl? You’ll all find out soon enough!
Bonus: Have people write their name on their guesses with a sharpie, then draw a balloon out of the correct basket once the gender is revealed! Then give little treats (like a Starbucks or Amazon gift card) to the winner.
Gender Reveal Donuts
I am in no way a good baker. If you are, you could try making donuts with pink and blue food coloring from scratch!
But if you’re like me, all you need to do is pick up some glazed, strawberry, and white icing donuts from your local donut shop. You can add pink and blue icing/sprinkles to customize them for your gender reveal party!
Tip: it seems like party guests are always more comfortable grabbing donut holes instead of a whole donut, so I recommend getting way fewer (ie. half the number) donuts than you think. You should fill in the rest with donut holes!
For our 30-guest party, we got 16 donuts and 2 dozen donut holes. We brought home 8 donuts and zero donut holes!
Don’t have donuts? You can also do this with cupcakes with blue and pink frosting, cake pops with blue and pink fillings, or even gender-reveal candy table treats!
Savory Food
You can do whatever you want for savory items, but I figured I’d share what we did.
I ordered a large Chic-Fil-A chicken minis tray, which has 40 chicken minis. That came to about $40.
If you’re doing a breakfast gender reveal party on a budget, feel free to skip on the store-bought food and do two breakfast casseroles, build-your-own breakfast tacos, or something like that.
I supplemented the chicken mini tray with a breakfast casserole using this recipe (tip: don’t add any salt- the breakfast sausage makes it plenty salty!! You may also want to halve or 3/4 the amount of breakfast sausage).
Since we did a 10 am gender reveal, I made the casserole the night before, let it sit in its casserole dish overnight, then put it in the oven for an hour right before the party. It was easy!
Drink Station
For drinks, we had coffee, water, and a mimosa bar. We got a coffee traveler from Starbucks, but you can totally save on the cost by making your own coffee!
To add to the photoworthiness of your gender reveal party, set out mugs for coffee instead of disposable cups if it’s feasible. You don’t need to set out a mug for everyone- chances are not all of your guests will be drinking coffee.
We also did a little water station with reusable cups as well- no need to buy disposable ones!
If you don’t already have a water dispenser, here’s a cute, affordable one on Amazon!
You can also easily do a water pitcher as well.
Mimosa Bar
A mimosa bar is a cheap, easy way to bring some festivity to a morning party!
I got two cartons of orange juice, one container of grapefruit juice, and one container of pineapple-mango juice. We bought two bottles of champagne but only ended up using one.
I didn’t already have carafes, and even if you don’t, you can choose to use pitchers or whatever you have lying around. But I knew that these were items I’d want for future parties, so decided it was worth it to buy some. They actually were way less expensive than I thought they’d be!
I got a set of four carafes to use during the party.
As a tip, I recommend checking out World Market carafes, which I found to be actually a bit cheaper than the basic ones I found on Amazon! But in case of price changes, there’s no available stock, or if you don’t have a World Market near you, here is a set on Amazon that is comparatively priced.
You also might notice that we sprinkled gender reveal confetti on the countertop with the food and drinks. That was so that we had pops of blue and pink confetti throughout the party to keep the theme consistent. This is the confetti we used!
Gender reveal balloon
We decided that the most photo-worthy gender reveal idea would be to pop a balloon. Confetti just makes for such a fun photo opportunity!
I think the best way to do the balloon idea is to add helium from Party City or your local party store. If this isn’t feasible, you can always blow up the gender reveal balloon with air and hang it from the ceiling.
If you buy a balloon and fill it up at Party City:
For some reason, our Party City was completely out of gender reveal balloons. But the good news is that you can bring your own balloon and pay to have them fill it with helium!
This was originally going to be our plan. I ordered a gender reveal balloon, then I called Party City and got instructions from them.
Here’s what they said:
- For a 36-inch balloon, it costs $9 to fill it (December 2021 pricing)
- Call ahead to schedule the balloon filling, especially if you need it filled on a weekend day
- If you don’t have an appointment to fill the balloon, you could end up waiting 1-2 hours (!!)
- So make an appointment. Just reiterating.
- You’ll want to fill it the same morning as your party. The helium might not last until the next day.
- You have to bring the balloon with the right color confetti in it already. So if you are waiting to find out with everyone else, you’ll need one person to know the gender and take charge of getting the balloon filled.
If you go to a local mom & pop shop:
We ended up visiting a local mom & pop shop here in Dallas, Party Bazaar. Not only was it closer to the gender reveal party location, but they had pretty much no wait time.
The catch: we couldn’t bring a 36-inch balloon because it wouldn’t fit through the door! The good news is that they have their own gender reveal balloon in stock!
For anyone reading this in Dallas, here is the process of getting a gender reveal balloon filled up at Party Bazaar:
Party Bazaar carries a 30-inch black gender reveal balloon that costs $19.99 and includes helium filling. You can give them the envelope with the gender in it, or tell them the gender if you know it, and they will fill it with the right color confetti.
You can order in advance so that they have it ready for you the morning of your event or you can place your order on the day of.
Our party was at 10 am and Party Bazaar opened at 9:45 am, so we sent a friend with the envelope to pick it up right before the party, instead of doing it ourselves.
At 30 inches, the balloon is huge- the perfect size for a gender reveal video. And even though the balloon was smaller than the 36-inch balloon I had originally ordered from Amazon, it was still perfect!
A List of the Best Gender Reveal Ideas
There are so many creative ways you can do the actual, unique gender reveal.
And when it comes to cost, these are pretty cheap gender reveal party ideas, so it’s a win-win.
Here are some of the most popular ways:
- Box with balloons inside
- Gender reveal cake
- Confetti cannons
- Hit a golf ball
- Punt a football
- Hit a baseball
- Kick a soccer ball
- Pick between bowties and tutus
- Scavenger hunts (here’s a sample video!)
Obviously, the sports-related gender reveal options and the powder cannons will require you to be outdoors, while the scavenger hunt can be a mix of indoors and outdoors depending on your clues.
Others, however, are indoor-friendly in case you’re worried about the weather. Additionally, they make for the perfect framing in front of your balloon arch!
In conclusion…
A photo-worthy gender reveal party on a budget is totally doable! Yup, your gender reveal can be both cheap and classy, and we hope ours can be an inspiration to you.
(And yes, it’s a boy for us, so you bet blue confetti was flying all around us!)
