Now let’s get to it… here are some of the best scenic drives in the USA!
1. Big Sur Scenic Drive (Pacific Coast Highway), California

One of the most iconic coastal drives in the United States, the Big Sur section of the Pacific Coast Highway winds along dramatic cliffs above the Pacific Ocean for 90 miles with unforgettable viewpoints around nearly every turn.
Key Highlights
- Dramatic coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean
- Iconic viewpoints along California’s Pacific Coast Highway
- One of the most photographed coastal drives in the world
- Beautiful stops for beaches, hiking, and photography
It’s no surprise that California has epic coastal views. But this stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Simeon in Northern California is one of the best drives to see them. In fact, it’s widely considered one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world! Towering cliffs plunge into the ocean while winding turns reveal breathtaking views of rugged coastline, hidden beaches, and dramatic sea stacks.
We stayed in Carmel-by-the-Sea and spent a day driving to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and back. It’s one of my favorite scenic drives in the USA! If you’ve been, you probably know exactly why! Below I’ve listed a few of my favorite stops, but you can also check out my post on the best things to do in Big Sur for a throrough list with photos!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Bixby Creek Bridge
- McWay Falls
- Pfeiffer Beach

2. Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic mountain drives in the United States, stretching nearly 470 miles through the Appalachian Mountains.
Key Highlights
- Rolling Appalachian mountain views
- Incredible fall foliage
- Hundreds of scenic overlooks
- Historic trails, waterfalls, and mountain towns
Often called “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park with Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Along the route, you’ll get sweeping mountain vistas, peaceful forest landscapes, and countless scenic pull-offs.
We started in Asheville and explored the Blue Ridge Parkway from there! There are a mix of pull offs and hikes you can do (my favorite is the Craggy Pinnacle Hike!). You can see my Blue Ridge Parkway itinerary, which includes a few different hotels as you move south on the Parkway. If you’d prefer to stay in Asheville and still see the Parkway, here’s my 3-day Asheville itinerary for you!
Tip: sunrise, sunset, and golden hour are my favorite times to photograph the Blue Ridge Mountains! The way the light and colors hit the mountains make them especially dreamy! You’ll also probably get some fog over the mountains in the early morning hours too, which makes them feel ethereal!
Note: make sure you check for any closures before going! Sections of the Parkway close for winter.
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Linn Cove Viaduct
- Craggy Gardens
- Rough Ridge Overlook
- Mount Mitchell State Park
3. Road to Hana, Maui

The Road to Hana is one of the most famous scenic drives in Hawaii, known for its lush rainforest, waterfalls, and dramatic coastal views across its 64 miles.
Key Highlights

- Lush tropical rainforest scenery
- Waterfalls and black sand beaches
- One of the most iconic Hawaiian road trips
This winding drive along Maui’s northeastern coast passes through dense jungle, past cascading waterfalls, and along dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. While the drive itself is unforgettable, the many stops along the way make the journey even more special. It’s a must on any Maui itinerary, and for good reason!
Start early in the day to try to avoid the crowds! Better yet, split this trip into two days and stay the night in Hana or nearby. That way you can really enjoy the many things to do along the drive! And don’t forget to get some fresh banana bread at a roadside stand!
See more incredible things to do in Maui here!
Best Stops Along the Drive

4. Million Dollar Highway & San Juan Skyway, Colorado

This region of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains is home to some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the United States, with towering peaks, winding mountain passes, and unforgettable scenic drives.
Key Highlights
- Dramatic alpine cliffs and high mountain passes
- Iconic drives like the Million Dollar Highway
- Scenic mountain towns including Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride
- Beautiful backroads like Last Dollar Road with sweeping valley views
The San Juan Mountains offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in Colorado. Not just one but several incredible drives can be experienced within this region!
The 25-mile-long Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton is famous for its steep cliffs and hairpin turns. With towering peaks surrounding the highway, this stretch of road offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Colorado. Meanwhile the larger San Juan Skyway loop connects charming mountain towns like Durango, Silverton, and Telluride.
For a quieter and equally stunning experience, Last Dollar Road offers sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and open ranchland, making it one of the most photogenic drives in Colorado! It was my favorite road that we drove – I loved it even more than the famous Million Dollar Highway!
(If you’re an experienced off-roader, Ophir Pass is a famous drive in this region as well! It’s a narrow, rugged high-alpine drive connecting Telluride to Highway 550.)
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Million Dollar Highway: Red Mountain Pass, Bear Creek Falls, Ouray
- San Juan Skyway: My favorite stretch is from Durango to Telluride by way of Dolores and Rico
- Last Dollar Road: Wilson Peak views, ranch landscapes, fall foliage
5. Seward Highway, Alaska

The 127-mile Seward Highway is one of the most spectacular scenic drives in Alaska, combining coastal fjords, towering mountains, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Key Highlights
- Views along Turnagain Arm
- Snow-capped peaks and glaciers
- Frequent wildlife sightings
- One of the most beautiful highways in Alaska
Running between Anchorage and Seward, this scenic highway follows the shoreline of Turnagain Arm before climbing into the mountains of the Kenai Peninsula. Along the way, you might even spot beluga whales, bears, or Dall sheep! And even if you don’t see much wildlife, you’re guaranteed views of glaciers and alpine landscapes.
We spent 4 days exploring the Kenai Peninsula and it was the perfect amount of time. We started in Anchorage, then stayed 2 nights in Seward (at Resurrection Lodge on the Bay), and one night in Homer. It’s a stunning part of Alaska! Intruiged by this drive? I wrote a post on the best stops along the Seward Highway that has plenty of photos and a full map that goes way more in depth. (Do not miss Virgin Creek Falls!)
We also combined this trip with Fairbanks and Valdez; driving to those towns puts you on other incredible scenic drives as well! My husband and I covered 33 hours of driving on our mainland Alaska journey and essentially every hour of driving was filled with stunning views! See our epic Alaska itinerary customizable for trips of all lengths here!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Beluga Point
- Virgin Creek Falls
- Portage Glacier
- Exit Glacier
6. Historic Columbia River Highway, Oregon

The Historic Columbia River Highway offers some of the most beautiful waterfall views in the Pacific Northwest along its 75 miles.
Key Highlights
- Dozens of waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge
- Dramatic cliffs and river views
- Historic scenic highway design
- Easy access from Portland
This historic road winds along the cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge on the border between Oregon and Washington State. It was designed specifically for sightseeing. Today, it remains one of the most scenic drives in Oregon thanks to its many waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints.
We’ve visited this stretch of Oregon several times. An easy way to stay nearby is to stay in Portland and explore from there. We always find ourselves staying at the Royal Sonesta in downtown Portland – I just love its quirky decor!
Multnomah Falls is the most iconic waterfall along the Columbia River Gorge. Head there early in the day if you are able to – that’ll help with the crowds. You’ll find fewer crowds at the other waterfalls in the area.
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Multnomah Falls
- Latourell Falls
- Crown Point Vista House
- Bridal Veil Falls
7. Yellowstone Grand Loop Road, Wyoming

The 142-mile-long Grand Loop Road connects many of the most famous sights in Yellowstone National Park.
Key Highlights
- Geothermal features and geysers
- Wildlife viewing opportunities
- Iconic national park landscapes
- Scenic lakes and rivers
This has to be the most unique scenic drive in the USA, purely because of the variety of things you can see along it! The Grand Loop Road forms the backbone of Yellowstone National Park, linking many of its most famous landmarks. You’ll get to experience geysers, waterfalls, wildlife, and sweeping landscapes all in a single scenic drive!
Whether you stay in the park or outside (we did both), I recommend 3-4 days so that you can really experience it all! From which Yellowstone entrance is best to the best photo spots in Yellowstone National Park, I’ve put together plenty of Yellowstone guides if this drive sounds like the perfect place for your next adventure!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Mammoth Hot Spring
- Grand Prismatic Spring
- Yellowstone Lake
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
8. Kuhio Highway (Kauai North Shore Drive), Hawaii

Kuhio Highway along Kauai’s North Shore offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Hawaii. It stretches for about 30 miles from Princeville to Haena.
Key Highlights
- Lush tropical mountains
- Beautiful beaches and bays
- Access to Hanalei and Haena
- Views of the Na Pali coastline
This scenic drive winds through some of the greenest landscapes in Hawaii, passing taro fields, beaches, and towering cliffs. The road eventually reaches the stunning North Shore town of Hanalei.
Driving along Kauai’s North Shore was easily one of our favorite parts of the island – it’s full of incredible photo spots in Kauai. We spent time at Tunnels Beach, which has some of the most beautiful mountain backdrops I’ve seen anywhere, with lush green cliffs rising straight behind the ocean.
It’s home to some of Kauai’s best hidden gems. One of my favorite stops along this drive was Nourish Hanalei – the views alone made it worth it. It serves up fresh local food and overlooks the mountains and taro fields. We also loved visiting Limahuli Garden & Preserve, which felt like a hidden gem and offered a beautiful look at native Hawaiian plants with incredible views of the coastline.
Kuhio Highway ends at Haena State Park. Haena State Park requires advance reservations for both entry and parking, especially during busy seasons. Access is limited to help preserve the area, so it’s important to plan ahead if you want to visit Ke’e Beach or hike the Kalalau Trail. If you’re unable to secure a parking pass, you can take a shuttle into the park, which is a popular option during peak times. That’s what we did!
While we didn’t hike the Kalalau Trail since I was pregnant at the time, it’s known for being one of the most stunning hikes in Hawaii and definitely something I’d love to come back for.
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Hanalei Bay
- Tunnels Beach
- Limahuli Garden & Preserve
- Hanalei Valley Lookout
9. Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park

The 48-mile-long Trail Ridge Road climbs high above the tree line, offering sweeping views across Rocky Mountain National Park.
Key Highlights
- One of the highest paved roads in North America
- Alpine tundra scenery
- Sweeping mountain vistas
- Frequent wildlife sightings
This incredible mountain road crosses the Continental Divide and reaches elevations above 12,000 feet. The drive offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in Colorado.
From the Beaver Meadows Entrance near Estes Park, the drive begins with scenic valley views around Moraine Park before gradually climbing into the mountains. As you continue toward Trail Ridge Road, the landscape shifts from dense forest to expansive alpine tundra, where the trees disappear and sweeping panoramic views stretch across the Rocky Mountains.
While Trail Ridge Road is the park’s most famous scenic drive, it is typically closed in winter due to snow. During colder months, you can still enjoy beautiful views from the Estes Park side of the park, especially near the Beaver Meadows entrance. But don’t let that deter you from visiting in the winter! We still got to enjoy the scenery and do a bit of hiking – we did the hike to Dream Lake in the snow and it was so worth it! I bet it’s even more stunning in the summer.
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Alpine Visitor Center
- Forest Canyon Overlook
- Many Parks Curve
- Rainbow Curve
10. Oregon Coast Scenic Drive (Pacific Coast Highway / Highway 101)

The Oregon Coast Scenic Drive follows Highway 101 along one of the most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline in the United States.
Key Highlights
- Dramatic sea stacks rising from the Pacific Ocean
- Historic lighthouses and coastal viewpoints
- Wide sandy beaches and rugged cliffs
- One of the most scenic sections of the Pacific Coast Highway
Driving the 363-mile-long Oregon Coast offers constantly changing views of rugged cliffs, wide sandy beaches, and crashing waves. Highway 101 winds along the coastline for hundreds of miles, passing charming seaside towns and some of the most photogenic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest.
Summer is the most popular time to visit thanks to milder weather, though I recommend shoulder season if you want fewer crowds. Even in the summer, you can expect a moody coastline with fog rolling in and out – it’s all part of the Oregon Coast’s charm.
The first time I visited, I started in Eugene and drove west toward the coast before heading north. It’s wild experiencing how quickly the weather changes! While it may be hot in Eugene or Portland, temperatures drop significantly as you reach the coast. On a later trip, I explored more of the Cannon Beach area with my family, which is known for its iconic sea stacks like Haystack Rock. Even in August it was very cold at the beach!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Cannon Beach & Haystack Rock
- Ecola State Park
- Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
- Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor
11. Lake Tahoe Scenic Byway, California & Nevada

The Lake Tahoe Scenic Byway circles one of the clearest alpine lakes in the world with breathtaking views of turquoise water and surrounding mountains.
Key Highlights
- Crystal-clear alpine lake views
- Snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains
- Beautiful beaches and viewpoints
- Year-round scenic beauty
Driving around Lake Tahoe offers stunning viewpoints of the lake from nearly every angle. The combination of deep blue water, forested mountains, and sandy beaches makes this one of the most beautiful alpine drives in the western United States.
The Lake Tahoe Scenic Byway is a 72-mile loop around the lake made up of several highways, including US-50, CA-89, and NV-28, with the east shore often considered the most scenic stretch. If you want to do the full drive around the lake, it takes about 3 hours to drive around without stopping. But I recommend budgeting for a whole day to fully enjoy the scenic viewpoints, beaches, and photo stops along the way. Go clockwise so that it’s easier to pull into overlooks as you drive around the lake!
As you drive around Lake Tahoe, your experience will vary based on where you are. The east shore features some of the most iconic views, with bright turquoise water and dramatic mountain backdrops. Meanwhile, the west shore is more forested with winding roads through tall pines and fewer glimpses of the water. The south shore is more lively with open beaches, and the north shore offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe which was a perfect home base for exploring North Lake Tahoe. We visited in January on our babymoon (it’s one of my recommended US babymoon destinations), which meant we were in Tahoe for the views, not the skiing! As such, we spent a lot of time driving around exploring coves and doing some light hiking. It was such a magical trip!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Sand Harbor State Park
- Emerald Bay
- Inspiration Point
- Zephyr Cove
12. Waimea Canyon Drive, Kauai

The 18-mile Waimea Canyon Drive leads to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Hawaii, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”
Key Highlights
- Colorful canyon cliffs and deep valleys
- Sweeping views across Kauai’s rugged landscape
- Lookouts overlooking the Na Pali Coast
- One of the most dramatic drives in Hawaii
I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to put two Kauai scenic drives on a list of 17 across the US. But I’m doing it anway! Waimea Canyon Drive feels completely different from the rest of Kauai and is such a fun contrast to the lush North Shore.
This scenic drive climbs from the dry western side of Kauai into the lush mountains above Waimea Canyon.
As you climb higher into the mountains, the views open up to reveal deep red canyon walls, layered ridges, and sweeping vistas that resemble a tropical version of the Grand Canyon. We spent time stopping at several viewpoints along the way, and each one offered a slightly different perspective. My favorite part of the drive was reaching Koke’e State Park, where the partial Na Pali views blew me away!
Both Waimea Canyon State Park and Kokeʻe State Park are worth exploring, especially if you have time to venture beyond the main overlooks. The higher you go, the more dramatic the views become, and on a clear day you can even see out toward the Na Pali Coast. It’s one of those drives where you’ll want to stop often because the scenery just keeps getting better.
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Waimea Canyon Lookout
- Puʻu Hinahina Lookout
- Kalalau Lookout
- Kokeʻe State Park
13. Mount Hood Scenic Byway, Oregon

Mount Hood Scenic Byway circles Oregon’s tallest volcano with beautiful views of forests, waterfalls, and alpine landscapes.
Key Highlights
- Views of Mount Hood’s snow-covered summit
- Forests, waterfalls, and alpine lakes
- Historic Timberline Lodge
- Scenic viewpoints throughout Mount Hood National Forest
This scenic byway takes you 105 miles around Mount Hood and offers some of the most impressive volcanic scenery in the Pacific Northwest. The loop is made up of several highways, primarily US-26 and OR-35, circling Mount Hood and connecting to the aforementioned Columbia River Gorge. The drive passes through forests and mountain valleys while revealing stunning views of the iconic peak.
I love how this drive combines dense forest, alpine scenery, and up-close views of Mount Hood as you loop around the mountain. It’s a great example of how diverse the Pacific Northwest landscape can be, and it’s a great day trip if you’re staying in the Portland area.
One of the highlights of our time driving around Mount Hood was visiting Trillium Lake. It offers one of the most iconic views of the mountain! On a clear day, the reflection of Mount Hood in the lake is absolutely stunning and easily one of the most photographed spots in Oregon. There’s nothing quite like visiting at sunset, watching kayakers float across the peaceful mirror lake reflecting Mount Hood!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Timberline Lodge
- Trillium Lake
- Mirror Lake
- Mount Hood Meadows
14. Windward Coast Drive, Oahu

The 55-mile Windward Coast Drive along Oahu’s eastern shoreline offers stunning views of turquoise water backed by steep green mountains.
Key Highlights
- Dramatic coastline with turquoise water
- Jagged mountains rising behind the shoreline
- Beautiful beaches and coastal viewpoints
- One of the most scenic drives on Oahu
This drive along Oahu’s windward side passes through lush coastal landscapes and charming beach towns. The road hugs the coastline with sweeping views of the Pacific and the dramatic cliffs of the Koʻolau Mountains.
After driving all around Oahu, I learned that the Windward Coast Drive is one of the most scenic stretches of road on the island. You get the ocean on one side and dramatic green mountains on the other. The contrast between the bright blue water and the steep, lush cliffs makes this drive especially stunning.
We loved exploring the viewpoints along the way and just taking in the scenery. This side of the island has a quieter, more local feel, and it’s a great drive to take your time with and explore some of the beaches and parks along the coast. This area is way more relaxed compared to the busier parts of Waikiki!
Check out my post on the most photo-worthy places in Oahu to see more photos of places you’ll find along this drive!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Makapuʻu Lookout
- Lanikai Beach
- Kualoa Regional Park
- Chinaman’s Hat Island viewpoint
15. Arches Scenic Drive, Utah

This scenic 36-mile drive through Arches National Park reveals some of the most extraordinary red rock formations in the American Southwest.
Key Highlights
- Hundreds of natural sandstone arches
- Dramatic desert landscapes
- Unique rock formations and viewpoints
- One of Utah’s most famous national parks
This road winds through the heart of Arches National Park, passing towering rock formations and vast desert landscapes. Many of the park’s most famous sights are easily accessible from the scenic drive.
We visited Arches National Park in the summer with our baby, so we focused on the shorter, easier stops along the scenic drive. And honestly, there are so many incredible ones that it didn’t feel like we were missing out by not doing long hikes. Many of the park’s most famous arches and viewpoints are accessible with short walks.
Driving through the park itself is part of the experience, with red rock formations, towering cliffs, and unique landscapes around every turn. Even just pulling over at the viewpoints and exploring a bit gave us such a great feel for the park, and it’s one of those places where the scenery feels almost surreal. Even though we only spent essentially one full day in the park, we still got to see so much! (We were staying in Telluride and drove to Arches, did one afternoon/evening of exploring, stayed overnight in Moab, then came back for another half day of exploring before returning to Telluride!)
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Double Arch
- The Windows
- Delicate Arch Viewpoint
- Park Avenue Viewpoint
16. Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, Oregon

The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway passes through the heart of the Cascade Mountains with views of volcanic peaks and alpine lakes across its 66 miles.
Key Highlights
- Beautiful alpine lakes throughout the drive
- Views of volcanic peaks like the Three Sisters
- Popular hiking and outdoor recreation areas
- One of Oregon’s most scenic mountain roads
This byway runs through Deschutes National Forest near Bend and connects a series of pristine alpine lakes surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. In summer and fall, it’s one of the most beautiful mountain drives in Oregon. Note that this road closes seasonally in the winter – check closures before going!
We based ourselves in Bend while exploring the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, which made it really easy to access the drive. One of the biggest highlights for us was paddleboarding on Sparks Lake, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains reflecting on the water. It was such a peaceful and beautiful experience and definitely one of our favorite moments in Oregon.
We also stopped for lunch at Elk Lake Lodge, which sits right on the water and has a really relaxed, scenic setting. The entire drive is filled with alpine lakes and mountain views, and it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to stop often and spend time enjoying each spot along the way!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Sparks Lake
- Devils Lake
- Elk Lake
- Lava Lake
17. Seven Mile Bridge / Overseas Highway, Florida Keys

The 113-mile-long Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys is one of the most unique scenic drives in the United States, crossing turquoise water for seven miles.
Key Highlights
- Ocean views on both sides of the highway
- The iconic Seven Mile Bridge
- Tropical island scenery
- One of the most famous road trips in Florida
This incredible highway connects the islands of the Florida Keys with bridges stretching across open water. Driving across the Seven Mile Bridge feels like you’re floating above the ocean and gives you beautiful views of the surrounding turquoise water.
We loved how different this drive feels compared to anywhere else in the US! It’s laid-back, tropical, and offers plenty of stops along the way. Whether you’re heading all the way to beautiful Key West (that’s what we did) or just exploring a portion of the Keys, this drive is just as much about the journey as the destination.
Don’t forget to get a slice of key lime pie somewhere!
Best Stops Along the Drive
- Seven Mile Bridge viewpoint
- Bahia Honda State Park
- Key West
- Islamorada
Underrated Scenic Drives Worth Adding to Your Road Trip
While the scenic drives above are some of the most iconic in the country, we’ve also come across a handful of lesser-known routes that ended up being just as memorable. If you’re looking for something a little more off the beaten path, these underrated scenic drives in the USA are absolutely worth adding to your itinerary!
Highland Scenic Highway, West Virginia

The Highland Scenic Highway is a 43-mile mountain road through Monongahela National Forest known for its sweeping overlooks, forested landscapes, and seasonal beauty.
We visited the Highland Scenic Highway in the winter and based ourselves in Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, where we rode the Christmas train – such a fun and unique experience. Even in the colder months, this area felt incredibly peaceful and scenic, with wide open mountain views and quiet forest roads. One of our favorite stops was Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, which offers panoramic views from the observation tower.
We also loved visiting the Falls of Hills Creek, which is one of the most beautiful waterfall areas in West Virginia, and stopping at overlooks like Little Laurel near Marlinton. While winter was magical, this drive is especially stunning in the fall when the mountains are covered in vibrant foliage. If you’re planning a winter trip, you’ll want to read this post on the best winter experiences near Cass Scenic Railroad State Park next!
Note that this highway is not maintained for winter travel and may have seasonal closures due to winter weather!
ACE Basin Scenic Byway, South Carolina

The ACE Basin Scenic Byway is a coastal route connecting Charleston to Beaufort, passing through marshlands, historic sites, and quiet Lowcountry landscapes.
It makes for a perfect addition to a larger Lowcountry road trip if you want to explore some of the most charming towns in the USA. While we love Charleston, we equally love exploring the much smaller but just as charming Beaufort! It has such a charming historic feel with waterfront views, quiet streets, and beautiful architecture.
Along the way, we visited the historic Old Sheldon church ruins and Hunting Island State Park. Both added a really unique and peaceful stop to the drive. This route pairs especially well with a trip to both Charleston and Savannah, making it an easy and scenic way to explore this part of the South.
Willow City Loop, Texas Hill Country

Willow City Loop is a scenic country road in the Texas Hill Country known for its rolling hills, wildflowers, and especially its famous bluebonnet blooms in the spring.
Since we’re based in Dallas, the Texas Hill Country is one of our favorite weekend road trip destinations, and Willow City Loop is especially beautiful in the spring. The rolling hills, wildflowers, and winding country roads make this one of the most scenic drives in Texas.
We love pairing this drive with time in Fredericksburg and exploring more of the Hill Country. If you’re not familiar with this part of Texas, it’s home to stunning swimming holes, beautiful state parks, and charming small towns. If you’re planning a trip, I’ve shared more in my guides to hidden gems around Fredericksburg and a full Texas Hill Country road trip itinerary.
Haleakalā Summit Drive, Maui, Hawaii

Haleakalā Summit Drive is a winding mountain road that climbs from sea level to over 10,000 feet, leading to the summit of Haleakalā National Park.
Driving up to Haleakalā Summit feels completely surreal, especially as you climb above the clouds and look out over the volcanic crater below. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in Hawaii, with dramatic terrain that feels almost otherworldly compared to the lush coastline.
Sunrise at Haleakalā is especially popular and requires a reservation in advance, so it’s important to plan ahead if that’s on your list. Even if you don’t make it for sunrise, the drive itself is one of the best things to do in Maui. I’ve also shared more in my guide to the best photo spots in Maui if you’re planning your visit!
Valley of Fire Scenic Drive, Nevada

The Valley of Fire Scenic Drive is the main road through Valley of Fire State Park, showcasing vibrant red rock formations, desert landscapes, and unique geological features.
Just 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas you’ll find Valley of Fire State Park. It’s one of the coolest state parks I’ve ever visited! We drove the full Valley of Fire Scenic Drive, and it ended up being one of the most visually striking desert landscapes we’ve experienced. My favorite viewpoint was the overlook above Mouse’s Tank Road, which is an iconic photo spot—especially at sunrise when the light hits the red rock formations just right.
We also loved exploring spots like the Fire Wave and Pink Canyon, both of which have incredibly unique colors and textures. The entire drive feels like a series of surreal landscapes, and if you’re planning to visit, check out the best photo spots in Valley of Fire!
(Note that if you’re visitng in the summer, many of the famous side-hikes in Arches National Park close due to extreme heat!)
Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a scenic mountain drive just outside Salt Lake City, known for its alpine scenery, hiking access, and vibrant fall foliage.
We visited Big Cottonwood Canyon in the fall, and the colors were absolutely stunning, with golden aspens lining the canyon and contrasting against the rocky peaks. It’s one of the most scenic photo spots around Salt Lake City!, especially during peak foliage season.
This scenic drive is easy to access from the city and offers a quick escape into the mountains. Note that if you’re visiting in the winter, the stretch that connects Big Cottonwood Canyon to Park City (Guardsman Pass Road) may be closed, while the canyon itself stays open for ski access.
Tips for Planning Scenic Drives in the USA

Scenic drives can easily become the highlight of a trip, but a little planning goes a long way. From remote mountain passes to coastal highways, these tips can help you make the most of your time on the road.
Start Early for the Best Light and Fewer Crowds
Many scenic routes are most beautiful early in the morning when the light is soft and the roads are quieter. Starting early also gives you more time to stop at viewpoints, short trails, and scenic overlooks without feeling rushed.
Allow Plenty of Time for Stops
Scenic drives often take longer than expected because there are so many places to pull over and explore. Waterfalls, overlooks, beaches, and short hikes can turn a two-hour drive into a full-day adventure, so try not to pack your schedule too tightly.
Download Maps for Remote Areas
Many of the most beautiful drives in the United States pass through national parks, mountains, or rural areas where cell service is limited. Downloading offline maps ahead of time can make navigation much easier once you’re on the road.
Check Road Conditions and Seasonal Closures
Some scenic drives are only open part of the year due to snow or weather conditions. Mountain passes like Trail Ridge Road or roads in Alaska may close seasonally, so it’s always worth checking the latest updates before your trip.
Bring Snacks, Water, and Fuel Up
Gas stations and restaurants can be few and far between on some scenic routes. Filling up your tank and packing snacks and water ensures you can enjoy the drive without worrying about the next stop.
Stop Often and Enjoy the Journey
The best scenic drives aren’t about getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Take your time, pull over at scenic viewpoints, and enjoy the landscapes along the way. Sometimes the unexpected stops become the most memorable parts of the trip.
